“The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus” (1923)

In the reading “The Theory and Organization of the Bauhaus”, Walter Gropius explains what are the main principles of the Bauhaus. Initially speaks of a vision of the changing world, one in the perception of a unity between all things is gradually being replace by more solitary worldview. The Bauhaus tries to reflect this new unity in all things.

First, the “Academy”, with Gropius considered a plague upon the artist and growth. The academy separates artists from the real world and gives them no concrete training. But the Bauhaus artist is back in contact with the concrete world of industry and design. It also allows the Bauhaus artist to work closely with peers and instructors in a technical / art based on the environment during their education.

The ultimate goal of the Bauhaus is claimed to be the total unit collective creative works of art. The main idea is to help students understand the basic properties of different materials and design fundamentals. Students are given more freedom to pursue creative ideas with the help of the cooperation of others. The strengths of each individual will be determined by all this preparation for the group in the creation of great works.
